Ministry of Teaching

  1. One of the most significant ways to get involved is through a Homegroup. The members of the groups do some Bible-based study, but the emphasis is support, prayer, and worship. We have a number of groups like this.
  2. We also have Bible-Studies where the emphasis is more on studying certain concepts or Biblical books. There is a lot to be gained from being in one of these groups.
  3. We have a lovely library with lots of super books and tapes.
  4. Too busy to commit to a group on an on-going basis? There are also courses that one can sign on for. The beauty of these is that the commitment is for a limited period of time only. We have a Making your Membership More Meaningful course which runs from time to time, but there will also be "Marriage and Family" Courses, Confirmation and Equipping God's People Courses.
  5. For the young people we have Sub-Zero ("cooler than ice-cubes!") which is a Friday Night's group for the 9-14 year olds.
  6. For our teens we have the MUG (Me, U, and God) Group that meets twice a month on a Sunday afternoon.
  7. From time to time we have Ladies and Men's Fellowship Activities. Sometimes have have breakfast and a speaker and at other times we tackle practical projects like the banner you see here. We hope to increase the number of activities here.
  8. Our Sunday School is called "King's Kids" and we have a committed group of Teachers. The idea is that we have two teachers for each class so that the teachers teach for two weeks and are off for two weeks. This is a really rewarding ministry, and as we grow, we'll need more teachers.
  9. Are you musical? We have a growing Music Team. So whether you play an instrument, or just like singing, we have regular practices. We don't have a formal choir as this often creates a sense of the choir performing and the congregation being the audience. We know that God is actually the audience and that we all have a part to play.

Ministry of Healing

In the Healing Group our focus is on monitoring and initiating activities for care and healing primarily within, but also outside the Congregation.

Here are some of the activities of the Healing Group

  1. We have a two Prayer Groups. One is our crisis prayer link that responds to telephonic requests for urgent prayer (There is also a sms-link). The other group is centered around a fortnightly prayer letter which lists the ongoing needs in the church.
  2. We work with the Divorce Care ministry that is run by Eastside community church and is geared towards helping those who have been through a divorce.
  3. We also want to get a Hospital Visiting Group off the ground and will concentrate on Kloof Hospital.
  4. We are trying to build up a list of people who can help with meals for those who are going through difficult times.
  5. We will have Healing Services from time to time.
  6. We will have a support group for people suffering from depression. Please chat to Theo if you are interested...

Ministry of Maintenance

Here are some of the activities that fall under the Maintenance Group...

  1. Enjoy gardening? We have a Grounds and Gardens team who regularly organise events and work parties to keep our church and environs beautiful.
  2. We also have a very active Maintenance Committee that is always looking for people who can volunteer their practical skills. We need carpenters, painters, handy people, sewing-people, spring-clean-people. If you have some time and elbow-grease to spare, there are always ways we can use you!
  3. Able to give a bit of time or effort? We have a number of Duty Rosters which provide people with opportunities to do door duty, tea duty, sound system duty and the like. We can always use volunteers in this area.

Ministry of Proclamation

The work of the Proclamation Group falls into 4 areas:

  1. Evangelism: Which is to take the Gospel message to people within our immediate communities, through concerts, outreaches, holiday clubs, and so on. We will try to provide training and events to do this.
  2. Mission: This is taking the Gospel to areas outside our neighbourhood and spheres of influence. This can be done by sponsoring a missionary, holding missionary awareness programmes, and highlighting opportunities for going on short-term missionary outreaches.
  3. Planting New Congregations: We have a vision to plant more congregations like ours. The first plant is happening in Jan 2007. See Grace Presbyterian.
  4. Social Outreach: This is making a practical difference in areas of poverty, health, and meeting the needs of those who are disadvantaged in our community.

Role of the Emmanuel Presby Session

The session is made up of the elders who have been elected, ordained and inducted to serve the congregation to care for, discern and involve the congregation. It is the highest structure in the church.
Role of Board of Management

The Board of Management (or Stewardship Board) is made up of folk who serve for three years and provide financial, maintenance and some HR functions for the church.
Role of Steering Committee

The Steercomm is a rotated subset of Session that deal with mundane business on a regular basis to streamline the business of Session.
